Developed by a team from NCSA Mosaic, the browser that popularized the World Wide Web in the early 90s, Netscape was the first widely distributed commercial browser.
Its slow decline began in the late 90s with the arrival of Internet Explorer and the start of the " browser wars " (the browser war) ultimately won by Microsoft's browser.
Losing momentum at the end of the 90s, Netscape created the Mozilla organization on May 30, 1998 and released its code under a free license. Versions 6 to 9 of the browser are based on the free software Mozilla Firefox… Once forgotten, AOL Time Warner, then owner of the browser, advised former Netscape users to switch to Firefox, which is still among the current standards.
