Amazon has been improving the Kindle Paperwhite over the years, and the latest model in the lineup (the 11th generation) is probably the best e-reader in the lineup. If you're on the fence about replacing your old Kindle Paperwhite, here are five reasons to justify upgrading to the latest model.
An even bigger screen
Generally when it comes to screen, bigger is better. And this is especially true for a device that is primarily intended for reading. The Kindle Paperwhite 11th Generation features a 6,8-inch (17.3 cm) e-ink display, an improvement over the 6-inch (15.2 cm) screen on the 10th-gen model. While 0,8 inches may not seem like a lot on paper, the difference is striking when comparing the two devices side by side, as you can see for yourself in the image below.
The new Kindle Paperwhite display is taller and wider, providing a more immersive reading experience and more real-world screen real estate for your books and comics. The larger display also allows for better PDF scaling—text no longer appears ridiculously small. The increased screen size doesn’t come at the expense of resolution, as you still get 300 pixels per inch (PPI), so text and images look just as sharp as before.
And the good news is that this doesn't come at the expense of weight. At 205g, it's only 14g heavier than its predecessor.
Improved responsiveness
E-ink displays are notorious for their frustratingly slow and unresponsive nature, and while the 11th-generation Kindle Paperwhite isn't free of these tech-related flaws, it's noticeably smoother than its predecessor.
The new Paperwhite is still far from smartphone-like fluidity. But it's fast and responsive enough that it won't be a drag when it comes to basic actions like typing or navigating the system. The performance boost is thanks to the more powerful chipset and the upgraded E Ink Carta 1200 display, which Amazon says makes page turns 20 percent faster.
Adjustable warm lighting
If you read mainly in bed, you'll love this The new warm light of the Kindle Paperwhite 11th generation. This feature, which debuted on the Kindle Oasis, uses a series of amber lights to cast a warm yellow hue on the screen to provide a more comfortable reading experience. Research shows that exposure to blue light at night can disrupt our natural sleep-wake cycle, making it harder to fall asleep. But just like your smartphone and laptop, you can adjust the color temperature of your Paperwhite's display to the warmer end of the color spectrum to reduce blue light.
The 11th-gen Paperwhite also features a much better lighting system: 17 LEDs, compared to 5 LEDs on the previous model. Amazon claims that the additional LEDs provide a 10% increase in brightness over the 10th-gen. More importantly, the additional LEDs result in a more uniform distribution of light, resulting in an evenly lit screen without the dark spots that were an issue with the 10th-gen Paperwhite.
USB-C connectivity instead of micro-USB
An outdated legacy of the past, the Kindle Paperwhite was until then equipped with a micro-USB port. It was not until this 11th generation thatAmazon switches to USB-C port. The USB-C port means you can now power the Paperwhite with the same cable you use to charge your phone and laptop. Not that Kindle e-readers need frequent charging, but it's nice not to have to carry an extra cable when traveling. Amazon includes a USB-A to USB-C cable in the box.
Finally, if you hate cables, you can opt for the Signature Edition of the Paperwhite, which supports wireless charging for an extra €20.
Exceptional autonomy
The Kindle e-readers are known for their incredible battery life, often lasting weeks (not days) on a single charge. The 10th-gen Paperwhite offered up to six weeks of battery life. But the new version raises the bar even higher, promising up to 10 weeks of battery life. Combined with faster charging and USB-C, the 11th-generation Paperwhite puts the Kindle Oasis, which has a micro USB port and boasts six weeks of battery life, to shame.
Of course you'll never get 10 weeks of battery life if you're a heavy user and keep the headlamp on all the time. But better battery life is better battery life, no matter what your usage is.
Of course, there’s no need to get rid of your old Paperwhite if it serves you well and you don’t mind its limitations. That said, if you want to take the plunge, you won’t be disappointed, because the new features in version 11 are really appreciable. The larger screen, better lighting system, faster performance, and USB-C will greatly improve your experience and make your reading even more enjoyable.
