Find 71 years of IKEA catalogs on this incredible site

The glossy IKEA catalog has long been THE annual meeting place for Nordic design lovers: we leafed through it to find the ideal bookcase or dream of a cozy living room from the Far North. It hasn't been published in print since 1971. But the good news is that all this heritage now exists in digital form! The brand has put online all of its catalogs, from 1950 to 2021, 71 years of Scandinavian design brought together in a virtual museum accessible online.

While most brands let their archives disappear, IKEA plays the collective memory card with its IKEA Museum. In just a few clicks, you can travel back seven decades of trends, materials, and colors!

The IKEA catalog: a reflection of its time for 7 decades

IKEA catalogs

Each year has its own catalog, meticulously digitized and archived. But the adventure began long before the Internet:

For over 70 years, the IKEA catalogue was produced in Älmhult. Printed in ever-increasing print runs, it was distributed to an ever-growing audience, while incorporating a growing number of references. From the 1950s, when Ingvar Kamprad wrote most of the texts himself, in the 1970s, marked by a sometimes radical "pop" aesthetic, then in the 2000s, more sober, the catalog constantly reflected its time. The 2021 edition closed this epic: it is the last to have been printed on paper.

This historical dimension is reflected in the virtual museum : geometric prints from the seventies, neutral palettes from the nineties, assumed minimalism from the 2010s… For decoration enthusiasts, it’s a unique panorama; for historians, a first-hand source on the evolution of housing.

What will you discover?

IKEA catalogs do not list every item on the shelves: they present a selection of products available at the time of publication. Some capsule collections or one-off collaborations may therefore be missing. This does not detract from the richness of the collection: thousands of pages scanned in high definition and all the catalogs are free to download for personal use.

How to explore these catalogs?

You have two options:

  1. Browse online. The interface mimics the original catalog: you turn the pages, zoom in on a detail, and hover over the timeline to change years. Perfect for a quick consultation or a search for inspiration.
  2. Download the PDF. Ideal if you like to zoom in at 400%, store files on a tablet or save a vintage layout for a future creative project.

One constraint remains: current content is mostly in Swedish. But in reality this is not a problem since the names are the same in Swedish (PAX, MALM…) and the abundant visuals nevertheless make navigation intuitive. IKEA plans to add other national editions in the future.

A goldmine for professionals and researchers

Designers, stylists and other creatives have here a unparalleled reservoir of images and references : colors, materials, scenographies… So many details capable of feeding a mood board or reviving a forgotten trend. Each page captures the precise spirit of a year; it’s the perfect antidote to inspiration failure.

The social science researchers also find food for thought. By observing the layout of rooms or the size of homes, they grasp the evolution of lifestyles: rationalization of spaces, rise of teleworking, democratization of LED lighting... Browsing these catalogs is like leafing through an illustrated chronicle of the 20th and 21st centuries, where furniture serves as a societal barometer.

A resource to consult without moderation

By scanning 71 years of catalogs, IKEA demonstrates that it is possible to preserve one's heritage while sharing it. This virtual museum becomes a reference tool, whether you want to analyze the history of Scandinavian design or simply find your childhood armchair.

Take the time to explore these archives: you may discover that The coffee table that sits in your living room today was already trendy in 1982. Enjoy your visit!
