There are many services and applications that allow you to very easily transform color photos into photos black and white. The opposite is not true, it is difficult to go from black and white to color. It is always impressive to see old images in color, those from the First or Second World War are a good example. This requires fine and tedious work of searching for nuance and colorization.
But the good news is that there has recently been a new online service, Colorize Photo from Algorithmia which will automatically process a black and white photo of your choice to restore color to it!
Once on the site, you can paste the URL of the photo you want to colorize, upload a photo, or use the sample tests offered by the site. Then press the button Colorize It and voila.
Using an algorithm, the tool will add colors to the image using deep learning (Deep learning) which will classify all the elements present in the image. It will use this classification to choose the colors to add.
But what is this colorization worth? Obviously, the results vary depending on the images. In some cases, the color gives a vintage look to your photos with very soft and subtle colors. In other cases the rendering is really very precise (with landscapes for example).
I did the test with several photos and the rendering is quite satisfactory, even if it is not rare that yellowish colors dominate:
But it doesn't always work, like in this beautiful desert photo:
Once the coloring is done by the algorithm of Colorize Photo, you can download the colorized version of your image. Unfortunately, you will have to accept that a small logo of Colorize Photo bottom right. You can also download the comparison photo (as in the images above).
