Finding out if your data is on the Dark Web is a breeze with this tool from Google.
Today, sharing our personal information online has become commonplace, usually for good reasons: to carry out administrative procedures, subscribe to subscriptions or make payments. Although the ideal is to always reinforce security and trust the person who receives our data, the sad truth is that no one is safe from information theft. Our data is a treasure for criminals who, in addition to attacking us directly with techniques such as phishing, can also sell this information on the Dark Web, an encrypted, anonymous space often out of reach of the authorities where illegal activities abound. Whether you're suspicious about your data being on the Dark Web or just curious, Google offers a free tool to check it out.
You may have considered venturing into the Dark Web via the Tor browser, one of the most accessible ways to do so. However, Google has a Dark Web analysis tool which saves you from having to install anything or venture into potentially dangerous places.
This tool allows you to monitor the presence of your data on the Dark Web. If you have a paid Google One subscription, the report is very comprehensive: it covers your name, postal address, phone number, email, username and password. Even without subscribing to their paid offer, you can check if your Google email and username are present on the Dark Web. Please note however that you need a Google account personal: Workspace accounts will not work.
Zoom in on the Dark Web
The Dark Web is a bit like the hidden side of the Internet that we know. While the majority of users browse what is called the "surface Web" (like Google, Facebook, Wikipedia, etc.), the Dark Web is located in the depths of the Net, out of reach of search engine traditional.
It’s an encrypted space where users can operate anonymously, without leaving a trace. While this privacy can serve legitimate causes, such as protecting whistleblowers or freedom of expression in authoritarian regimes, it also attracts illegal activities. From black markets for drugs, weapons, stolen data, to hacker forums, this hidden part of the web is full of gray areas. That’s why it’s crucial to know if our personal data is there, because it could mean that it’s at the mercy of malicious individuals.
