Today's image is taken from a Pathé studios newsreel film shot in the streets of New York in 1922. It shows two young women installing and then using one of the very first mobile (or portable) telephones.

They use a fire hydrant and an umbrella as an antenna...

It was not until Motorola in 1983 (61 years) that the first mobile phone was actually marketed (the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X).
