195 billion pixels, that's the definition of this incredible image. 195 billion pixels, that's the equivalent of the definition of 16 photos taken with an iPhone XS… In short, it's really huge and it's not for nothing that it's the 3rd largest photo in the world..
What's the point, you might ask? The point of such a photo, beyond the technical prowess, is that you'll be able to zoom in and zoom out again on it to see the smallest details... and you'll see, it's super impressive!
Chinese company Jingkun Technology, also known by its more telling name Bigpixel, is behind the shot. The photo was taken from the top of Shanghai's Oriental Pearl Tower and comes in the form of a 360-degree photo that you can navigate around.
The photo was taken in 2015 and It took the team two months of processing to put it all together. As you might expect with such a large image fusion job, there are some issues. For example, in some places you can see the same person multiple times (well yes, those moving pedestrians are annoying!).
However, these typos are relatively rare and do not detract from the technical feat behind this photo. As mentioned earlier, this image offers incredible detail, so much so that you can zoom in to read car license plates or traffic signs !
BigPixel did not specify which camera and lens were used to create this image, but it is highly likely that it was made with specialized equipment.
