We live in a time where we communicate through audio, video, emojis or GIFs, but a few years ago digital communication was done only through text messages. You had to resort to all sorts of tricks to represent things in a pictorial way. The use of ASCII art was one of them!
Although it is a little outdated, theASCII art still has its followers. It is an art form that consists of reproducing images using only the letters and special characters contained in the ASCII code (a computer standard for character encoding).
For those who would like to discover or rediscover this art form, ASCII Art Converter is an online tool that will allow you to create ASCII images very easily and for free.
Convert an image to an ASCII image
As you will see, this tool is very easy to use. The first thing you will have to do is select an image to convert on your computer. Images must not weigh more than 0.5 MB.
Before moving on to the conversion, you will be able to adjust different options:
- Output width: allows you to determine how many characters wide the image will be
- Use color: by default your image will be generated in black and white, but you can ask it to transcribe the colors
- Restrict to 16 ANSI colors: use only the 16 ANSI colors
- Use retro phosphor colors: use green characters on a black background to give a retro look
- Invert: use a black background and white characters
All you have to do is press the “Convert!” button to start converting your image to ASCII.
Here are some examples using various options:
As you can see, the results are very convincing and will change depending on the options you have selected (with some images it will be better to try to put them in negative or color, because they will look much better).
Once the ASCII art is generated, you will be able to copy the characters or download your creation in three different file formats: .HTML, .TXT or .ANS.
In short, it's a really well-designed tool that turns out to be quite effective! There's something to have a little fun with!
