Since I created this blog in 2013, I have systematically used correction tools to avoid as many mistakes as possible in my texts. Not that I particularly make spelling or grammar mistakes, but with the amount of articles I write, I am not immune to letting some slip through. So, that is why it is very pleasant to be able to rely on a powerful and well-designed tool to go back over my mistakes and avoid errors.
Among these tools, Antidote is one of my favorites! I have been using it since 2016 when it was still only in version 9!
And this software, which positions itself as the “cure for all your words”, is increasingly powerful and effective with each version.
So, let's take a quick look at the solution. Antidote 11 as well asAntidote+, which integrates Antidote 11, Antidote Web (the online version) and Antidote Mobile. In both cases, these solutions are provided as standard for French and, during installation, it is proposed to purchase an online module for English.
Antidote 11, more than just a spell checker on your computer
One thing is for sure, Antidote 11 is much more than a simple spelling or grammar checker on your computer. It is really an assistant or proofreader that will allow you to correct your mistakes by explaining them to you, but also to improve your texts thanks to numerous language, typography, style analysis tools... in both French and English!
Why use the Antidote 11 tool suite?
If you were already using older versions of Antidote, you won't be disoriented by version 11 (and that's a good thing). But you will be happy to discover some welcome new features that we will detail a little further on.
After many years, I could no longer do without Antidote on a daily basis as it helps me produce quality and error-free writing. So here are its main features and most important functionalities.
A corrector above all!
Even though it can do a lot of things, the main interest of Antidote (at least for me) lies in its advanced corrector. This module that integrates with most common software (web browsers, messaging tools, word processors, etc.) is quite formidable!
The corrector analyzes the text to detect almost instantly any mistakes or problems and reports them to you by underlining them with a color code according to the type of problem:
- Red for language : for everything related to spelling and grammar
- Orange for typography: to correct errors in spaces, quotation marks, punctuation in general…
- Blue for the style : repetitions, turns of phrase, vocabulary, readability and even inclusiveness!
Hovering over an underlined word will display a tooltip with the corrections and their explanations or a suggested replacement. Click to confirm, and the text is automatically replaced.
If you want to go further in improving your text, Antidote 11 also offers a revision tool that allows you to analyze your writing from several angles, statistics and inspection filters (agreements, gender, conjugation, etc.).
A very complete collection of dictionaries
As Antidote is not just a simple corrector, it provides you with a whole series of dictionaries.
Dictionaries offer definitions, synonyms, antonyms, expressions, semantic fields and word families. They also offer the possibility to check the conjugation of a word, listen to its pronunciation, take note of difficulties reported by linguists and consult thousands of carefully selected examples.
In total, 10 dictionaries are present:
- Definitions : classic and practical explanations to confirm the correct use of terms.
- Synonymes : a valuable tool for the writer who wishes to avoid the monotony of repetitions.
- Antonyms : to find a word that has the opposite meaning to another.
- Co-occurrences : to help you identify words that can be used in conjunction with a particular word.
- Lexical field : This is a group of nouns, adjectives and verbs that belong to the same syntactic category (for example, for the word "theater", associated words could include "play", "scene", "show", "actor", "play"...)
- Family : This dictionary collects all words that have a common morphological root (for example, with the word "sea", this could include "outremer", "amerrissage", etc.)
- Conjugation : to find the different forms of a verb.
- rhymes : to find inspiration for rhymes.
- citations : to access quotes that contain the word you are looking for.
- History : etymological aspect of the word, useful for understanding its origin and evolution over time.
Language guides to improve
Correcting mistakes and errors is good, but understanding them is even better! Antidote 11 includes 11 language guides that are designed to teach you or remind you of the fundamentals of the French and English languages. You can access each of these guides at any time, but you can also directly access the rule in question when correcting an error in your text. In the tooltips, simply click on the orange word to access the corresponding guide.
- Spelling : all spelling rules (plural, conjugation, capitalization, etc.)
- Glossary : here you will have files on the use of words (neologisms, anglicisms, semantics, etc.)
- Grammar : all grammar rules (adjectives, nouns, verbs, etc.)
- Syntax : everything that governs the order of words and their organization
- Punctuation : reminders on the use of signs
- Style : a point to help you make your texts more enjoyable
- Copywriting : all the writing conventions that apply when writing specific documents
- Typography : everything that concerns the arrangement of the elements of a text
- Phonetic : to understand the sounds and rhythm of language
- History : fact sheets on the evolution of our language
- Language points : here you will find chronicles published on the Druide Informatique site about frequently asked linguistic questions
The idea here is not to read all the guides one after the other, which would be totally indigestible, but to refer to them in case of doubt or question!
An Anti-Oops! filter for your email software
A little more anecdotal but nevertheless essential, the Anti-Oops! filter from Antidote 11 integrates with the main messaging software on Windows or Mac.
Let anyone who has never sent an email mentioning an attachment that they forgot to include throw the first dictionary at me... Indeed, there is nothing more classic than forgetting to include an attachment.
Antidote will therefore analyze each message sent to ensure that you do not forget this famous document that you promise to the recipient of the email!
Better yet, Anti-Oops! also intercepts emails that contain spelling and grammar mistakes before they are sent. This is a very useful feature on a daily basis. Note that if, for some reason of your own, you do not appreciate these interventions, Anti-Oops! can be disabled in the settings panel.
And some very interesting new features
If Antidote 11 is presented by Druide as even more effective than previous versions and offering more precise correction thanks to a neural correction engine, the tool also includes more concrete new features.
First of all, without having been revolutionized, the interface of Antidote 11 has been redesigned to be more user-friendly, airy and functional. It is thus possible to hide certain elements of the interface in order to concentrate on the correction.
Then we really appreciate it new style fixes which allow you to make your texts more fluid, with fewer repetitions... the tooltips sometimes even offer new, clearer wording for certain passages in your texts.
Another interesting point, the dictionary now includes audio pronunciation of words. This is particularly interesting when learning French or English!
Finally, it is now possible to correct copied text. Simply press Ctrl + C + C to copy a piece of text and send it directly to the Antidote text editor and start the correction. When the correction is finished, select “Copy and close” from the corrector and you just have to paste your corrected text where you need it!
Install Antidote 11 on Windows or Mac
To start using Antidote 11 on your computer, you will need to download the PC or Mac version from your customer area on the Druide website, the company behind Antidote. Plan on a good Internet connection, because the installation file is relatively large at 1.5 GB.
Once downloaded, launch the executable which will first extract the data from the archive before starting the installation of Antidote.
At this stage, as Antidote has integrations with many software (web browsers, Microsoft Office suite, etc.) it is recommended to close most applications.
Once Antidote 11 is installed, you will be asked to log in to your Druide account to activate the software.
Very interesting point, once connected, the tool asks you if you want to synchronize your data. This is particularly useful if you use Antidote on several devices. This way you will find your settings, your favorites and your personal dictionaries on all your machines!
Finally Connectix Utility, which is installed with Antidote, will allow you to select the software on your machine for which you want to integrate Antidote! Depending on your needs, select the software for which you think you need a powerful correction assistant! Then follow what Connectix tells you to activate the integration of Antidote on each of the selected software. If you have not done so before, this is when you will need to close the software in question.
Please note that subsequently, Connectix will allow you to add or remove integrations in your software, but also to view all compatible software, adjust the global settings of Antidote integrations and consult the user guide for each connector.
With Antidote+, find your favorite proofreader wherever you are
Antidote is available in three editions: Antidote+ Staff (€59/year), Antidote+ Family (€99/year for 5 users) and Antidote 11 (one-time purchase at €119). The first two options are subscriptions that include upgrades during the subscription period and allow access to Antidote Web and Antidote Mobile. The Antidote 11 option is a perpetual license that does not include upgrades and can be installed locally on any Windows or Mac computer.
If you already have a previous version of Antidote, you can benefit from a discount on upgrading to the new version.
Antidote Web
Antidote Web is simply an online platform that offers the ability to correct your texts from any device connected to the Internet, including phones, tablets and Chromebooks. It is essentially aa web version of the Antidote application which allows you to access all of its tools from any modern browser.
This is a very complementary tool to the software version since it allows you to find the corrector, dictionaries and guides as well as your own settings wherever you are without needing to install Antidote. It's ideal if you are very mobile!
To use it, simply go to antidote.app and log in with your Druide/Antidote credentials.
Antidote Mobile
Antidote Mobile, the smartphone version of Antidote is a little different. Available only on theApp Store Apple, it does not include the correction tool. However, you will find all the dictionaries and language guides that make up the classic version.
It also differentiates itself by adding a little game in which you will have to guess a word from a definition.
Conclusion
Ultimately, Antidote 11, with its multiple versions, proves to be a real daily aid for all those who wish to perfect their spelling, grammar and style. Whether you are at home, in the office or on the move, it ensures that your text is impeccable. Of course, linguistic perfection has a cost, but the investment is worth it. With Antidote, you can be sure that your texts exude professionalism and clarity. However, like any solution, Antidote has its own limits. Remember that it is a tool designed to help you, and not to completely replace careful human proofreading. In the end, you have the last word.
