Get notified when you turn on Caps Lock in Windows

Article updated on January 3, 2025

If there is one key on your keyboard that you rarely use, it is the Caps Lock key. However, it can sometimes be annoying when you PRESS it WITHOUT CAREFULLY (Oops!) and have to retype all the text you just wrote.

You may not have known this, but there is an accessibility option in Windows that allows you to be alerted by an audible signal each time you press CAPS LOCK, NUM LOCK (the numeric keypad lock) or SCROLL LOCK.

So we will see how to activate this option under Windows 7, 8 and 10.

In Windows 10

  • Click on the start menu
  • Go to Settings
  • Then on Options ergonomics
  • On the left in the menu, select Keyboard
  • You can then activate the option Toggle keys to hear a sound signal when you press the CAPS LOCK key

To save time, you can also activate a shortcut that will allow you to activate/deactivate this sound option by holding down the NUM LOCK key for 5 seconds.

On Windows 8

  • Bring up the Charms bar on the right side of your screen (Windows key + C)
  • Click on Settings
  • Choose Change PC settings at the bottom of the bar
  • In the left menu of the window that opens, select Ergonomic options
  • Then Keyboard
  • You can then activate the option Toggle keys and voila

On Windows 7

  • Open the start menu (bottom right) and type “Keyboard”
  • In the results that appear, click on Change how your keyboard works

  • In the window that opens, go to the section Make typing easier
  • Check the box Enable Toggle Keys

If you check the option just below (Activate toggle keys… for 5 seconds), pressing the NUM LOCK key for 5 seconds will quickly toggle this option on or off.
