When you have multiple files, you may need to rename them while numbering them sequentially. This is the case, for example, with a series of photos on a particular subject that you would like to rename. It is then necessary to give them a name and number them. It is possible to do this by renaming each photo one after the other and giving it a number. But, in reality, it is possible to do it very simply, in a few seconds.
In the following example, I will rename a series of photos and I will show you how to do it in batches by numbering them automatically, and this in just a few clicks.
Rename files sequentially in seconds
To perform this operation and rename files, we will assume that all the files to be renamed are stored in the same folder on your computer.
- Left-click anywhere in the folder (to tell Windows where you are working).
- Press CTRL + A to select all files in the folder.

- Make a right click with the mouse on the first file and select Rename. Alternatively, you can click F2 to be able to rename the files or with Windows 11, the “Rename” button is directly accessible in the toolbar.

- Type an appropriate name – in my case I typed MyPhotos.

- Press Enter and you will see that all photos/files now have the same name, but with consecutive numbers added in parentheses.

There you have it! It's really very simple, but it can save you a lot of time. The only downside is that using parentheses around incremented numbers is not always very practical; if you have specific needs, you will have to use dedicated software.
Best Practices for File Renaming
Since we're talking about renaming files, I'll take this opportunity to remind you some best practices to rename your files:
- Plan ahead : Before you start renaming your files, think about how you want them to be organized. This may depend on the nature of the files, how you plan to use them, and your personal preferences.
- Be descriptive, but brief : File names should be descriptive enough that you can identify the contents of the file without having to open it, but they should also be short enough to be easily managed. Avoid file names that are too long, as they can cause problems with some programs.
- Avoid special characters : Some operating systems have problems with files that contain special characters such as colons, slashes, or quotes. It is generally best to avoid these characters in file names.
- Keep track of versions : If you are working on a document that has multiple versions, it may be helpful to include the version number in the file name to help you keep track of the most recent version and how the file has evolved.
By following these tips, you can manage your files more efficiently and avoid potential problems. Renaming files may seem like a small part of managing your digital data, but it can make a big difference in your efficiency and productivity.
