In the video below, you will discover Emma. Emma is a caricature of how our body will evolve in 20 years if working conditions in offices do not evolve.
This model was created by specialists after conducting a survey among office workers.
Emma, your colleague from the future
In a report called The Work Colleague of The Future (The colleague of the future) William Higham and his teams compiled the results of a study on the health problems of 3000 office workers in Germany, France and Great Britain.
The survey results concluded that 50% of workers suffered from eye pain, 48% from headaches and 48% from back pain. Using these figures, the researchers were able to create Emma, a life-size doll that combines all the words of its models: excess weight, a hunched back, varicose veins due to poor blood circulation caused by sedentary work, red and dry eyes after long hours spent staring at a computer screen, swollen wrists from repetitive movements, hairy ears and noses due to poor air quality and red and irritated skin from the heat of laptops and stress-related eczema.
For William Higham, if we do not quickly question our working methods, we are rapidly heading towards a future full of Emmas!
As many professionals recommend, improving health at work involves improving posture, moving around regularly, taking breaks to stretch your legs (at least 5 minutes every hour), and staying hydrated.
It is therefore essential to change your habits now if you have a sedentary job. Some companies are already addressing these issues. For example, we are seeing more and more standing meetings appearing in companies, which have the advantage of promoting your blood circulation... while reducing the duration of these meetings (of course, we want to sit down again quickly)!
In short, we have been looking at working conditions in difficult and physical jobs for a long time, but ultimately, office workers also have their flaws! It is time to remedy this!
