Use strong passwords
One of the first steps to strengthening your digital security is to create strong, unique passwords for each of your accounts.
Yes, a secure password must indeed be at least 12 characters long, including:
- Uppercase and lowercase letters,
- Numbers
- And symbols.
Avoid using obvious personal information, such as your name, or that of your loved ones, or your date of birth. Also consider using a password manager (Dashlane, etc.) to store and generate complex and strong passwords!
Enable two-factor authentication (2FA)
Second, 2FA. Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security to your online accounts.
Even if someone does manage to get your password, it will be more difficult for them to access your accounts without this second verification factor, which can be a code sent by SMS or a dedicated app.
Enabling 2FA is especially important for your sensitive accounts, such as your email and banking services. Many applications exist (google authenticator, Authy, etc.).
Be careful with your IP address
Your IP address, which is a unique identifier assigned to your internet connection, can be used by hackers to track your online activities and even attempt to hack your devices!
Knowing your current IP address is therefore very useful for monitoring your connection and detecting any suspicious activity. To protect your IP address, consider using a virtual private network (VPN) which masks your location and encrypts your connection, making it more difficult for third parties to track your online activities. While most are paid services, they're worth it!
Beware of suspicious emails and links on the internet!
Phishing attacks, where cybercriminals impersonate legitimate entities to obtain sensitive information, are becoming increasingly common in 2024.
Never (ever!) click on links or open attachments from suspicious emails or messages, even if they appear to come from trusted sources.
Also, always check the sender's email address and be wary of payment requests via strange links. Many hack attempts arrive in your mailboxes every day!
