FaceCheck.id, find someone online from a photo

Article updated on October 20, 2023

I already told you about Pimeyes which allowed you to find all of someone's photos on the web from a single photo, here is an alternative called FaceCheck.id.

Similar to reverse search engines that allow you to search based on images, FaceCheck.id is an investigative tool that allows you tosearch the internet using a photo of a face. So, the search result will show you photos and links to web pages where the tool has spotted the face of the person in the photo or people who look like them.

Presented as an investigative tool allowing you to check if someone really exists or if they are not a dangerous criminal (they are really crazy, these Americans) FaceCheck.id nevertheless turns out to be a rather interesting tool.

Operating on the basis of proprietary artificial intelligence technology (yet another one), this tool will measure the similarity between a given face and all those present in its database to detect faces that are identical or very similar to the one in the photo you uploaded.

FaceCheck’s database is built from readily available public web pages such as news sites, blogs, or even social media. Additionally, the tool’s AI is designed not to index or search for children’s faces.

So the big flaw with FaceCheck Id is that it will only find a face if it has some coverage on the web… an average person who is not a criminal or someone with some media coverage may not show up in search results.

To use the tool, simply upload a photo with a face and click the big “Search Internet by Face” button. I tested it with my head and it didn’t yield much… So, according to the tool, these people look like me:

Well, that's not quite it, but there are some who are a bit like me.

By the way, you may have noticed the number in a colored bubble at the top right of each photo? This is the match quality score. This score, which ranges from 0 to 100, indicates the degree of match of the found face. A score of 100 indicates a perfect match and lower scores can indicate that it is the same person in a different environment, taken from a different angle… or someone else altogether. That's why they added a color scale corresponding to match ranges:

  • Red (90 to 100) = certain match
  • Yellow (83 to 89) = reliable match
  • Beige (70 to 82) = uncertain correspondence
  • Gray (50 to 69) = weak match

In my example, all the faces found are in the uncertain match category… at least the tool is honest 😉!

Finally, on each photo, the source is indicated and by clicking on the photo, you will be directed to the site on which it is located.

In terms of protecting your data, the site does not record your search history nor your IP address. Furthermore, the photos you upload to the site to perform a search are not stored.

Remove your face from the FaceCheck.id database

If you are "lucky" enough to find your face on FaceCheck.id, it is entirely possible to request that it be removed from the database.

To do this, when you do a search in which your face appears:

  • Click on the “Remove My Photos” link at the top right of the search
  • select the relevant photos
  • click on “Select Photos of Your Face and Then Continue Here” or scroll to the bottom of the page
  • You then have two options to prove that it is you:
    • upload an identity document on which your photo can be seen and which you have previously anonymized (hide or blur sensitive data such as name, address, document number, etc.)
    • upload a selfie of yourself touching your chin with 2 fingers (to prove the photo is of you)
  • Then click on “Complete Removal Request” to send the request

The request should be processed within 5 working days and free of charge.
