WhatTheFont: Online tool to identify a font

Update of 14/11/2016:  And if you want to go further, I have listed here 4 online tools to identify a font !

While working recently on the graphic redesign of Byothe.fr, I came across a logo with a font that I liked.

Unfortunately, since it was an image I initially thought I would never be able to find out what font it was.

So I searched the net until I came across WhatTheFont. And there, miracle, in a few clicks I managed to find the name of the font I was looking for…

Discover Creative Fabrica for free fonts impressive!

You will see, this tool is very simple and has the enormous advantage of being free (even if it offers to sell you font packs at a later stage).

So to identify a font on an image, go to WhatTheFont.

First of all, and for an optimal result, the tool's designers advise optimizing the image that you are going to put online:

  • use an image with several different letters of the same font
  • if possible use an image with letters higher than 100 pixels
  • make sure the letters don't touch each other
  • the text should be as horizontal as possible

Basic photo software like Paint should be enough to make any necessary edits.

Once on the site, you have the choice between uploading an image or specifying the address (URL) of an image already online.

We will test with the Byothe.fr logo without the mention “Trucs, Bidules et Machins du Web” which is in the same font, but in italics and smaller.

The tool will analyze the image and then make you work a little. On plots of the image, it will ask you to specify which letter it is.

Click on the button towards "Continue" and the tool will suggest the 5 fonts that it considers closest to the one used on your image. And in the case of the Byothe.fr logo, it works perfectly since it suggests the font that I used (ITC Bauhaus):

Finally, if you click on the font that suits you best, you will get more details as well as the possibility to purchase this font. However, be aware that many fonts are available for free on the Internet thanks to sites like Dafonts ou FFonts.

Of course, if you come across a font that was created from scratch based on the handwriting of an ordinary person (Easily create a font with your own handwriting: MyScriptFont.com) you might come up empty handed… But for more classic fonts, it works very well! Come on, I'll let you try!
