Generating music using AI: the creation part of AIVA
Artificial intelligence is taking up more and more space in the news, particularly with ChatGPT, but the AI we are talking about here has been learning to extract sound information for several years. The idea of the designers of AIVA, originally a Luxembourg startup, is to offer a creative experience through its software. This can be summed up in two main sections: a sound generation part and a track editing part. You will be guided in several ways in the development of your compositions: from the most basic to the most sophisticated. Let's see all of this!
Generate music quickly and easily
Once your user account is created, you will have access to all the features, even in the free version. After clicking on the button Create Track green at the top left, you will be prompted to choose the style of music you want to generate.

Once the creation has started, a small window will offer you to refine some parameters:
- the tone of the piece (Key signature);
- the length of the piece, which can range from less than 30 seconds to more than 5 minutes;
- the number of different pieces to generate when you want to have a choice through comparative listening.
Generate music a little more precisely using presets
By going through the tab Preset Style, you will be able to direct the feeling of your composition by selecting an emoticon rather than a key. Indeed, a smiley ???? is more telling than an F# major! It is also in this tab that you will make more advanced musical choices such as the rhythmic signature (the number of beats per measure), the tempo as well as the melodic elements.

Adjust each component with the mode Generation Profile
Now let's take a closer look at how to customize the creation process. To do this, go to the tab Generation Profile.
General settings
You will make your general changes in the settings section or Settings:
There you can adjust the rhythmic signature, the tempo and the emotional orientation of the piece. But the interest of the generation mode is to go even further. Indeed, you will be able to predefine:
- tempo variations;
- a dynamic range (difference between the loudest and quietest sounds);
- to balance track volumes;
- to start structuring your song: this is called arrangement, where for example the rhythm section starts alone, the bass follows a little later, etc.
The basic tracks
Once you are happy with the general settings, three things (Layers) by default are accessible: harmony where you will evolve your structures thanks to ever more fanciful combinations, the chords (Chords) and the bass.

layers additional
It is also possible to choose additional tracks among which you will find:
A melody section where it is possible to select an instrument lead within the AIVA database.

A percussion section to set up a rhythmic pattern (pattern) and a kit (bass drum, hi-hat, snare drum, etc.).

In the parts Extra et ornaments, you can choose to integrate arpeggios, rhythmic melodies and sound layers.

Power artificial intelligence with your music
You can also “feed” your artificial intelligence favorite songs. In fact, the button Upload Influence gives you the possibility to upload your own music. What better way to make the software understand what inspiration you are in? Upload a funk hit in the bass section and AIVA will know how to interpret the groovy lines! If your samples contain too much information and you only want to hear the instruments, take a look at SongDonkey.

Fine adjustments
It is possible to go further in the creation and refine your musical works by:
- choosing instruments based on their cohesion in the final mix;
- linking the notes together (legato);
- adding swing ;
- doubling instruments.
When you feel your cooking recipe is ready, all you have to do is cook and simmer it using the software.
The Song Management Window
You will find your organized pieces in the section Home of the application.

AIVA generates a sound file and MIDI tracks (format and communication protocol) that you can work on later. If you don't have a digital audio workstation, AIVA offers you its solution online - or in desktop application version - with the editing part that we will discover.
The Editing Part: Remix and Rearrange Your Tracks
Once the generative part of your tracks is finished, you have the possibility to come back to them in order to edit and mix them. This part is comparable to the post-production work of a sound engineer.
Here we find our different tracks “spread out” and colored on a timeline or timeline.

The features of the editing part
All the essential elements of audio software are present, namely:
- a reading timeline in which we can zoom;
- an arrangement part (button editor);
- a part editing midi notes (button viewer);
- a time cursor showing us where we are in the song;
- the ability to cut, replace, insert before or after, delete, etc.;
- the volume of each track;
- a mute button;
- a button to play the track solo.
The idea is to rearrange and mix the song to your liking, changing the rhythmic patterns (patterns).
Treatments for each of the tracks
You can edit each instrument transcribed in MIDI note by note by clicking directly on the gray part on the left.

There you will find what you need to process the sound with:
- dynamics management;
- equalization (filters);
- of reverb;
- du delay ;
- stereo management.
You can give a special atmosphere to the piece by applying a Bass boost or the vinyl effect.

To go further in edit mode
For those wishing to leave with a more detailed mixed model, the designers have thought of integrating automation: this involves modulating and "writing" the quantity of certain effects according to time.

Edit mode also allows:
- to add comments;
- to change the BPM (tempo);
- to add a layer ;
- to replace the instruments;
- to change octave;
- to articulate the notes between them.
Downloading your songs and MIDI tracks
With the free version of AIVA, you will be able to receive 3 ZIP files per month, including the MP3 and its MIDI tracks. However, the music will not belong to you and you will not be able to market your works. The paid versions allow you to download more tracks and in better quality (WAV = CD quality), to obtain separate audio tracks, to recover copyrights and monetization of your works.
For a free online music editing software, the support for the creation process is very interesting. You can refine your tracks again and again thanks to the many settings available and the data ingested by the artificial intelligence. You can even contribute to expanding its "knowledge" by submitting your own influences. What better way to express your ideas than to provide the AI with the tune you have in mind? The song must last at least 60 seconds and if you don't have something to cut it at the precise point, here is WebAudioCutter. Finally, VAT can be a tool in case of lack of inspiration and to evolve the music towards still unknown territories.
