Rome, Paris, London, Rio… this video uses more than 3 screenshots from Google Maps to take you on a tour of the planet in less than 300 minutes 2 seconds! Made using the technique ofhyperlapse, a variation of timelapse in which the camera is not fixed, the video below represents a huge amount of editing work.
After spending 2 whole days taking screenshots of Google Maps using Chrome's developer tool – which removes all the unnecessary stuff that appears on the screen – Matteo Archondis then worked frame by frame to stabilize each sequence and give the illusion of a harmonious timelapse clip.
Then, post-production took him a whole week of work to assemble all the screenshots!
The idea was to show that we all have tools at our disposal to discover the world around us, even if we can't afford to travel to very distant places. And then I always wanted to create something new and experiment with Google Maps and Street View, which are for me incredible inventions to let us discover and see places from our computer without leaving home.
Inspired by the work of Rob Whitworth and relying on the resources of Google Maps, Matteo therefore produced the clip " Hyperlapse Around the World » to celebrate 12 years of Google’s mapping service!
