Google: 3 tips for searching in a specific language

Article updated on March 31, 2025

I recently wanted to search Google for press articles in English… unfortunately, Google being trop very clever, it offers you adapted results thanks to geolocation. Thus, if you are in France, Google will give you priority results in French, results in other languages can come very far after (especially for articles)… Difficult in these conditions to do a search in English.

While this is very practical most of the time (who is interested in articles in Uzbek), there are cases where you would like to see only results in a certain language, other than the language of the country you are in... in short, we will see how to search primarily for results in English (or any other language) in Google, while living in France.

I suggest you 3 solutions that will allow you to search on Google in the language of your choice :

1- The first technique is simple but not very satisfactory: we change the parameters

Just go to Google FR, click on “Settings” at the bottom of the page. Then go to “Search settings”, then “Languages”… In “Display search results in:” you can choose the languages that interest you…

The only problem with this method is that the selected settings will be used by default… you will have to change them each time you want. change language.

2- Advanced search

This solution is much simpler, but Google, true to the motto of " Why do it simple when you can do it complicated? » has hidden this very handy feature quite deep in its menu tree.

To do an advanced search, you must therefore go to Google FR, then:

  • Click on " Settings » at the bottom right of the Google homepage
  • Go to " Advanced search »
  • You then have access to quite a few search options (it's enough to be confusing)
  • You will then just need to fill in at least the fields “Find pages with…” and of course “ Then refine the search by… language » which will give you access to a drop-down list with most of the existing languages

Moreover, this advanced search tool offers a number of very practical options to refine your searches, with fields such as the region, the place where the search terms appear, the type of file, etc.

The big advantage of this solution is that it doesn't change anything in your default search settings.

3- The Sioux trick, the predefined URL for doing a search in English

This last solution is probably the simplest and quickest to implement.

  • To start, meet Google FR
  • In your browser, the URL should appear like this:
url-google-fr
  • After this URL, you just need to add a slash ("/") then a specific code corresponding to the language in which you want Google to locate you (and therefore, the language in which you want to do your search)... This code is for example "en" to switch to the English version of Google:
url-google-en
  • Then press "Enter" and the URL will change to "www.google.fr/?hl=en" and the Google search page will be displayed in English and allow you to search in English:

The results of your search will then be the same as if you were searching from an English-speaking country.

This solution is therefore the simplest of the 3 provided you know the code of the language you are interested in. By the way, if you are looking for a particular language code, you can find them on Wikipedia, you have to take the first 2-digit code. For example, for Breton, you will have to add “br”…

And since I'm nice, I'll give you the most common ones:

In conclusion, Google does not offer any instinctive solution for carrying out a search in English or in a language other than that of the country in which you are located, or in any case other than the language of your settings saved with Google... Of the 3 solutions offered, the 3rd is the simplest, but it's up to you to choose the one that suits you!

  1. Hi Byothe,

As a little Swiss, I would have another solution, simpler, but more limited.

No longer use google.fr but google.ch. This way, the choice of the language you want is displayed directly under the search field. However, it is limited to the Swiss national languages, namely French, German, Italian and Romansh (for those who would like to have exotic results).

Alternatively, if you regularly need to search in both French and English, the same measure can be used on google.ca.

Best regards and good tutorial, thank you
