When we want to put a video online to share it around us, we often have the reflex to use YouTube… but the reference platform in the world of video is not necessarily adapted to your needs. Are there alternatives to YouTube as a video host?
Indeed, when you want to share a family video to show the first steps of the youngest or grandma blowing out her 90 candles, YouTube is not the right solution.
This is why I wanted to introduce you to Streamable, a site that allows you to host your videos for free (with certain reservations that we will see below) and share them.
Host a video on Streamable
In its free version, Streamable allows you to host your HD videos for 90 days with a size limit of 500MB or 10 minutes… and people who watch your videos will see ads on the page of the latter (nothing very intrusive).
However, these constraints will still allow you to publish short videos that don't belong elsewhere.
To download a video, go to the website streamable from your computer or smartphone and click on “Start uploading”.
You will then have two options: either upload a video from your device or paste the URL of a video available online.
The first option allows you to upload the video you want to share, but also edit the beginning and end of your video and crop it. You will then get a link to the video you uploaded and edited and you can share it however you like.
If you create a free account (but not mandatory), you will be able to access all the videos you have hosted on the site.
Share a video clip
The second video upload option offered by Streamable allows you to use a video already online and gives you the possibility to shorten it to keep only what interests you.
Again, you can edit your video by changing the start and end, but also select an area on the screen that you want to keep (crop option).
Finally, Streamble has some interesting tools available no matter what your video is (uploaded from your computer or retrieved from a URL) like the ability to change the thumbnail or see stats on how many people are watching it.
