Here is another existential question to which the crazy web has found an answer (in the same genre there was already this: Mystery solved: we finally know the length of the football pitches in Olive and Tom!) ... How far does Mario travel in Super Mario Bros?
The answer we owe to Nick Greene of mental_floss. So, to get from the first level to the final castle through all the bonus levels, Mario travels in all and for all 5.96 km… only !
To find this result, Nick assumed that the famous plumber was the height of a standard human with a stride of about 66cm (which seems a little small to me... but then again Mario doesn't seem very big!).
He then retrieved the game level maps made by Ian Albert and he proportionally calculated the distances traveled in each of the levels to arrive at this figure of 5.96km.

Finally, he gave some details about his measurements:
- The longest level is level 8-1 which measures 317 m
- the shortest being the 4-3 with 129 m
- with 2 levels in the water, Mario swims a total of 7,5 lengths of an Olympic pool (371 m) to which must be added 2 lengths (105 m) if we add the bonus levels
- the shortest path (ie. without bonus levels) allows you to complete the game in 5.47 km
Thanks to the madness of the web, here is another mystery solved! The most impressive thing is that people are interested in this kind of thing almost 30 years after the release of this cult game on NES in 1985! Nostalgia when you hold us…
