In April 2015, several internet users spotted a curious image visible in Google Maps view south of Islamabad, Pakistan: a small Android robot, legs spread, cheerfully urinating on the Apple logo. The exact coordinates ( 33°30′52.5″N 73°03′33.2″E ) immediately circulate on Twitter, and the screenshot goes viral.
How could such a "work of art" have been displayed?
At the time, Google still offered the tool map Makerwhich allowed users to add routes, points of interest, or graphic elements. A simple illustration (a greenish drawing on a map background) clearly slipped through the moderation net: no one realized that the form was anything but innocent.
By the time the teams intervened, the mocking little robot was already everywhere on social media.
A (very) rapid disappearance
Google reacted within hours: the drawing was removed, then map Maker is temporarily closed while contributions are being validated. Since then, the scene is no longer visible on Google Maps, relegated to the status of a cult anecdote, much like the Loch Ness Monster hidden in Street View or the Pac-Man logo playable on April 1st.
Despite everything, this episode remains legendary!
This indiscretion remains, nevertheless, a legendary and little-known episode from the web for several reasons:
- A nod to the Android/Apple "turf war" : the image illustrated in its own way the fierce competition (and sometimes questionable sense of humor) that drives the fans of the two giants.
- A reminder of the risks of collaborative content : even the most experienced company can find itself caught off guard by a hijacking.
- A textbook case for Google The mishap led to stricter moderation and the definitive closure of Map Maker a year later.
More than ten years later, all that remains are screenshots and the amused memory of a minor graphic provocation. But if someone mentions "Android peeing on the apple," you'll now know it's not an urban legend... simply an Easter egg that survived for a few hours before disappearing from the official map.
