Unlike previous generations, today's children are growing up with the Internet that has always existed and is therefore part of their daily lives. As a result, for their parents, after learning how to use the Internet, they must learn how to manage children and their relationship with the Internet.
When should you let your kids use the Internet for the first time? At what age can they jump in the water? What should you explain to them before they do?
The infographic below outlines 10 critical things every parent should teach their kids about the Internet before they go online for the first time. This isn't a guarantee that their online experience will be safe, but it should give them a few things to start on the right foot.
The infographic is in English, but I have translated the 10 commandments of the Internet for a child who would surf for the first time. Here are the 10 recommendations that you could give to your child before he connects:
- Don't post anything you might regret later.
- Protect your privacy on social networks
- Don't get fooled by email scams
- Report any harassment, tell us about it
- Behave properly, not everything is allowed on the Internet
- Create different passwords for your different accounts (and change them often)
- Be careful with in-app purchases
- Avoid bad places on the web
- Don't become obsessed with the internet
- Do not share any personal information online
