Search Engine Journal has just released the 3rd version of its infographic on the growth of social media and we can say that the numbers are rather impressive!
In fact, according to the data used for this infographic, the number of active social media users has never been higher:
- LinkedIn: 97 million
- Pinterest: 100 million
- Snapchat: 200 million
- Tumblr: 230 million
- Twitter: 316 million
- Google+: 343 million
- Instagram: 400 million
- YouTube: 1 billion
- Facebook: 1.5 billion
The number of active users has increased by 102% in 6 years
In 2015, there were 1 million active users on social networks compared to 960 in 970, a growth of 2010% in 102 years! It's quite incredible!
On the other hand, over the years, the growth rate has slowed down. In 2012, the number of social network users increased by 17.3%, while in 2015 this growth was only 9.3%... and the forecast for 2018 anticipates a continuation of this slowdown with growth of 6.8%.
The social media population
In 2015, 3 billion people on Earth had access to the Internet (i.e. 45% of the world's population). 2.1 billion of them have accounts on social networks and 1.7 billion people are active on these networks (posting messages, photos, etc.).
In demographic terms, it is unsurprisingly the young age group that is most present on the networks since 89% of 18-29 year-olds have one or more accounts.
For the rest, I'll let you discover the rest of the infographic which gives you details network by network!

Haven't we simply reached saturation with all these social networks?
