Kapsys SmartConnect, the smartphone for seniors

Article updated on January 5, 2025 by Byothe

logo-kapsysYour grandfather is eyeing your beautiful iPhone and would like the same one? You would like to please him without it being lost? Don't bother looking any further... Today I will present to you a smartphone specially designed for seniors…

But first we need to introduce the manufacturer to you. Kapsys is a French company (yes, there are some left) which has been marketing mobility and communication products for seniors and the visually impaired since 2007 (Sic).

Despite the difference with the tests carried out previously, I do not change a winning team. (Finally, I hope) and I will therefore present this phone to you from two angles: design and exterior rendering and handling and use.

Of course, the test was more complicated to carry out than the others. Indeed, I really don't think I'm their target audience... However, it must be recognized that the work provided is pretty good and I am sure that the granny from Cantal will be delighted with her new toy!

  • Design and exterior rendering:

The box provided is, to say the least, modern… It uses the codes of the “normal” smartphones launched by Apple in 2007 with the iPhone.

The accessoiries, are of very good quality. And it should be noted that they provide a very practical charging station, even for young people. You will also get a free wrist strap. Even if in my opinion, the granny from Cantal also finds it old-fashioned.

2013-12-20 12.15.50This Kapsys smartphone has a 3.5 inch screen (surely small, but sufficient), no front camera, a 5 megapixel main photo sensor with an LED flash, a classic micro USB port and a 3,5 mm jack.

2013-12-20 12.19.42In conclusion, nothing exciting, but that's not the goal, and at this price. (349€, editor’s note) You shouldn't ask for the moon either!

  • Getting started and use:

When I started using the phone, I was bothered by the interface. But after a few minutes, I managed to understand how it works and get my "feelings" back.

The touchscreen is very good quality, and the physical keys too. Which really makes it easy to choose between the two.

The camera is not the best on the market, but still allows you to take some nice photos or videos.

Of course, the comparison of the camera with an iPhone 5S is unfavorable, however it is worth noting the good quality of the built-in camera. You can't ask for the same qualities from phones. You can of course increase the storage capacity via a memory card space (SD).

Now that I've made the "standard" presentation of the phone, I have to tell you about its benefits for seniors.

First of all, it is important to note the presence of an SOS button, which can be useful for alerting emergency services or a loved one in the event of illness, fall or other.

Also, if your grandpa is not a big geek who is super comfortable with these new technologies, know that you can remotely take control of your phone (using VNC Viewer software) and thus solve its problems.

Then, this phone also gives access to a “Digital Magnifier” function, here is the list of keyboard shortcuts:

  • Up and Down Arrow keys = Zooms + and -.
  • * key = freeze screen.
  • key 0 = add light.
  • # key = change color contrast.
  • key 6 = take a picture of the image on the screen and save it to the gallery

Finally, to finish convincing you, you will also have access to a voice command. A kind of defector between Siri (Apple's aptly named) and the BlackBerry voice assistant (don't forget that they were the first - before Apple - to distribute this voice assistance as standard on the phone). Like BlackBerrys, you activate it by pressing a button on the right side of the phone.

With a short press you can:

  • control navigation through phone screens by voice.
  • query and control the phone via keywords.

With a long press, you can dictate text for an input box.

Now, if you were convinced by this test, here is the list (not exhaustive)) points of sale:

So is not life beautiful ?
