We've all sung an Italian or Japanese hit without understanding a single line, carried along by the melody. And we've all said to ourselves, at least once, "If I had the lyrics in front of me, I'd surely learn." Songlingo transforms this idea into a method. You choose a song, review the words with flashcards, then listen while following the translation, line by line. Everything happens online, and you progress at your own pace. By listening, the words come back, your ear gets used to it, and the expressions become ingrained. A simple and often more effective method than a traditional course for learning a foreign language. Learn a language through songs with Songlingo
You've probably already searched for the lyrics of a song on Google, or launched a "lyrics" version on YouTube to follow line by line. Listen to music In a foreign language, trying to understand its meaning is a form of learning that we have all experienced.
It is this experience thatAdam Elitzur wanted to structure with Songlingo. The site takes up this common reflex, but organizes it like a real learning tool. You choose a song in the language you want to listen to, then the language you want to see the translation in. You can also let yourself be guided by the shuffle function, which selects a song based on your settings. The lyrics are then broken down word by word, with their translation. You just have to explore them in advance in the form of flashcards, and save the words you want to review.
Once you're ready, you play the song. Songlingo uses YouTube to stream the song, displaying the lyrics line by line with their translation just below. You follow along, you listen, you absorb. Unlike a simple subtitled video, everything here is designed to facilitate memorization. And unlike tools like Duolingo, there are no levels, no badges, no reminders. Just the music, and the joy of freely progressing.
The site works equally well on desktop and mobile. karaoke mode is available on both media, to sing along to the synchronized lyrics. An application iOS exists, but no Android version is available yet.
Our opinion on this learning tool
What strikes you from the very first minutes of Songlingo is its freedom. There's no path to follow, no rigid framework. You enter, choose a song, and explore at your own pace. Nothing rushes you, nothing interrupts you.
Creating an account enriches the experience. You can save words to review, keep track of songs listened to, and find these items in two separate spaces. leaderboard is also visible on the interface. It indicates your position in relation to other users, without insistence, but with enough to keep the desire to come back.
The interface remains fluid, but everything is in English. This was not a problem in our case, but, for a beginner profile, it can slow down the handling. Especially if the learning language is not English. The synchronization of the words depends on the youtube videos used. In some cases, they are slightly offset or incomplete, without this really affecting their use.
Function Random worked well during the test. It often offers little-known songs in the chosen language, which refreshes the listening experience and allows you to get away from the usual songs. We come across songs rich in idiomatic expressions, useful for working on comprehension, pronunciation, and enriching vocabulary. And sometimes, it's a viral hit that pops up with a click. This little element of surprise also contributes to the pleasure.
But the problem is the "Submit" function, which allows you to choose the song you want. Songlingo seems quite limited in this regard, especially when we wanted to test Eros Ramazotti – L'aurora (or maybe it was a bug on our end). We also wanted to test a cult anime opening, that of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (Again by YUI). Our advice? Clearly indicate the artist and the title of your song.
Ultimately, Songlingo delivers on its promise: learning without constraints, simply by listening to music. And that's what makes it so great.
