The web is truly full of sites of all kinds and that is definitely what makes it so charming... Indeed, as the title of this article indicates, it is even possible to learn to speak Quebecois, the "beautiful" language of our Canadian cousins, thanks to the site simply entitled I speak Quebecois.com.
The goal of this site, built in a humorous tone, is to allow you to learn and understand Quebec French, its accents, its swear words and its sacres (insults).
On the program, lots of things to help you successfully learn the language. I advise you, to start, to take a look at the lexicon in order to understand the vocabulary. You will discover that " Fucked » meant “Crazy”, that “ Not at all » means “Not at all” or even that a “ Kiss " is none other than the masculine attribute (the penis).
Once you have assimilated all this vocabulary, you can go to the “Videos” section to put it into practice by watching excerpts from popular films or series in Quebec, such as this parody of “Bref” entitled “Bref, je suis un prof au Québec”:
Below each video, you will find a short questionnaire to ensure that you have understood the sequence and thus test your understanding of the language!
Behind this site, Pierre Moreau, a Frenchman who lived several years in Quebec and who wanted to share his knowledge on this North American version of our good French:
What are the reasons and motivations that led you to launch this project?
It's a project that I'm working on in my own time, it responds to a desire to share things that are close to my heart, in this case a culture, a language and television moments. There is no real other goal, I just hope that the website will find its audience.
How did the idea come about, and when?
In 2010, I left my native France to do a quick end-of-studies internship in Montreal (3 months). I loved life in Quebec so much that I stayed for 3 years. I loved this period and I think I totally immersed myself in Quebec culture.
When I returned to France, I realized how much the French had a false image of Quebec. Besides the fact that the accent is quite easily considered funny, I sometimes had the impression that the cultural influence of Quebec in France was limited to Celine Dion and Garou.
Based on this observation, I wanted to share a little of my audio-visual discoveries from Quebec. I use this medium in the hope of promoting some Quebec productions. I also use it as a pretext to familiarize French speakers with the Quebec accent. Without pretension and in a fun way, I hope to bring another perspective on Quebec. To show non-Canadian French speakers that Quebec is not just an accent that is too easily criticized, but it is also a modern society with its own culture and identity.
How long has the site been around and how has it evolved?
The first version of www.je-parle-quebecois.com was put online in January 2015. Since then, many improvements have been made, and this should continue. Often, it is the Internet users who suggest developments to make the site more interesting. And it works since traffic increases significantly every month.
In short, I speak Quebecois.com is a fun initiative that will offer you a new video every week to perfect your practice of Quebecois... that way you will be ready for your next vacation in the land of the caribou!
