cosmo 1932…this name probably doesn’t mean anything to you, but this satellite passed over my head in Paris at the very moment I was starting the first lines of this article.
Cosmo 1932 is a Russian military reconnaissance satellite, launched by the former USSR in March 1988 by means of a Tsyklon 2 rocket…
How did I know that Cosmo 1932 was flying over Paris? It's quite simple, there is a website that positions all the satellites orbiting our planet on a map. It is Line Of Sight.
Developped by Patricio Gonzalez Vivo, who claims to be an artist and engineer, this site is both beautiful and functional.
Currently, more than 2 satellites are flying above our heads at speeds exceeding 250 km/h and these are sometimes visible at night to the naked eye for a trained eye… but you have to know where to look!
Using publicly available data from sites such as SatNOGS, Patricio has therefore managed to reconstruct a real-time map of the satellites that travel across our sky, but also of the International Space Station (ISS).
So you can search for your city and find out at any time which satellites are passing over you... That's how I discovered Cosmo 1932.
