Do you, like me, also enjoy working with music? You probably do what everyone else does. You go on YouTube And you start a lo-fi playlist. It's simple, yes. But between us, it's not always very effective. We're easily fooled by a suggested video or a catchy title. Not to mention that infamous message that pauses the sound to ask if we're still there… To avoid all these distractions, Fabrizio Rinaldi and Marianna created Lofi.cafe. Their idea is quite simple: to offer an ultra-simple player, designed entirely for concentration. So, what does this tool bring to everyday life? We tested it, and here's our review.
An experience designed for concentration (and not for the algorithm)
On YouTube, you launch a playlist…and there you are, trapped. Everything is designed to hold your attention at all costs. You have suggestions on the side, scrolling comments, and notifications. Not to mention the ads that cut the sound at the worst possible moment. In short, it's very easy to leave your work session to watch "just another video."
With Lofi.cafe, it's the complete opposite. You open the site. The music starts. An animated visual appears in the background. Apart from the playback controls, there's nothing trying to grab your attention. And when a station encounters a problem, the site displays an explanatory message: Ops, this station is not working Then, it automatically switches to another stream, without you needing to search for a new live stream.
A nice little detail: a counter displays the number of people listening at the same time as you. It's located at the very top of the screen. It's discreet, but it gives the impression of working as a team, without the distractions of social media.
Keyboard shortcuts to control everything without leaving your work
Imagine you're working. You're not enjoying the music playing in the background and want to skip to the next track. On YouTube, you have to grab the Souris, find the tab and navigate amidst the suggestions to find another piece. On paper, it seems harmless. Yet, this simple search is enough to break your concentration.
Lofi.cafe solves this problem with the shortcuts below :
- Space bar: to instantly resume or pause the music
- Left/Right arrows: to switch to another radio station with a simple flick of the finger
- Up/Down arrows: for very fine volume adjustment
- Press G: to change the background animation (V to view the original video)
- Press the L button: to switch to dark mode and reduce eye strain
Admittedly, you need to keep the tab open on the screen (or glance at it briefly) for the buttons to work. But since the page is completely uncluttered, nothing distracts you. You can change the music in a second and immediately return to your task.
A consistent visual environment to keep you in your bubble
On YouTube, the visuals in lo-fi live streams are often very well done. The problem is that they get lost in the middle of the interface, among the buttons, suggestions, and other elements displayed on the screen. On Lofi.cafe, the visuals take center stage. Between pixel art, Japanese-inspired designs, and retro animations, you enjoy a soothing environment.
If you have a second monitor or a tablet on your desk, you can even leave the site open while you work. It almost becomes a small, animated world that accompanies your session. You can change the ambiance at any time to vary the atmosphere. The L key even activates a retro effect inspired by old CRT monitors. It's a purely aesthetic detail, but it also contributes to the site's atmosphere.
Integrated tools to structure your work sessions
Beyond music, the site also includes some very handy tools. In particular, you'll find a Pomodoro timer, accessible with a single click at the top of the screen. No need to open another application or a new tab to manage your work sessions. Everything is already at your fingertips.
You can easily share the station you're listening to or switch to full screen with a single touch. These are small details, but they really make a difference in everyday life. What we like… and what's a little bit missing

The strong points :
- It's 100% free, with no registration and no advertising
- The tool loads instantly and doesn't lag.
- You can install it as an application on PC or Mac (PWA) to have it in your taskbar.
- Keyboard navigation is extremely convenient.
Limitations to keep in mind:
- You don't choose the tracks one by one: they are continuous radio streams.
- You have to like the retro and pixel art visual style (although the low-power mode allows you to get around this).
- The interface is in English (but it's so simple that it's really not a problem)
