Web historians, if they existed, would talk about the time when the Internet was a playground, a stage where creativity flourished at every turn of the browser. Long before social media and “influencers,” there were jokes, troll websites, and scams disguised as treasures.
One of these gems, perhaps the most scintillating of them all, is called DownloadMoreRAM.com. So, let's do a little web archaeology and unearth this (still online) relic of a bygone era.
Historical context
Computing, in its early days, seemed like an uncharted land, a digital frontier where anything seemed possible. The first Windows versions opened the doors to an unknown world, creating in the user a thirst for learning, but also a lot of confusion. Preconceived ideas and myths about technology abounded.
Among these myths, the desire to increase the RAM memory of one's computer at a lower cost has appeared. Thus, the software SoftRAM 95, launched in the late 90s, claimed to allow this feat. For about $80, this software was supposed to double the RAM of any computer. Although fraudulent, the software had a short-lived success, proof of the vulnerability of users.
A few years later, in 2009, the website DownloadMoreRAM.com was launched as a big joke to trap the most naive.

DownloadMoreRAM.com, a masterpiece of computer humor
This site, at first glance, seemed serious. It promised users to "download" additional RAM directly from their browser. The site also stated this in its early versions:
What is this site? DownloadMoreRAM does exactly what you think it does! Our website allows you to “download more RAM” for free. Simply select the amount you need and download it! Your speed and memory will be improved instantly!
The sober and professional design reinforced this impression of seriousness. But that was without counting on the ingenuity of its creators and the simplicity of its interface. Three buttons were presented, offering respectively 1 GB, 2 GB or 4 GB of RAM to "download".
When the user clicked, a progress bar appeared that simulated the download. After a few seconds, a message appeared congratulating them on their “new” hardware. However, no actual download took place, no changes were made to the user’s computer. That was the genius of the joke: exploiting a common misunderstanding about the physical nature of RAM.
RAM, or on-chip memory random access memory is a physical component of the computer that allows data to be temporarily stored for quick access.. Unlike storage memory like a hard drive, RAM is volatile, meaning it loses its data once the computer is turned off. Increasing RAM requires adding or replacing physical sticks, so it cannot be "downloaded."
The site’s goal wasn’t to scam, but rather to educate with humor. For the uninitiated, it was a reminder that not everything that glitters on the Internet is gold. For the initiated, it was a shared joke, a nod to those early years when one could still be fooled by such nonsense.
The Evolution of DownloadMoreRAM.com
Over time, the site has adapted. The "download" options have evolved, now offering up to 32 GB of fictitious RAM.

And to make the humorous message even clearer, once the "download" is complete, a "More Information" link directs users to Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" music video, another famous Internet joke (see Rickroll).
The site's legacy has also crossed the web. An app of the same name (Download More RAM) appeared on the Microsoft Store in 2016, reinforcing the reach of this timeless joke while recalling its fictional nature.

DownloadMoreRAM.com is a shining example of the geek humor that marked the birth of the mainstream web. By mixing education and fun, it reminds us of the importance of being both curious and skeptical in the digital age. In a world where information is omnipresent, sites like this teach us to question, reflect, and smile in the face of the mysteries of technology.
