Need space on your system partition, here's how to extend it!

Article updated on January 24, 2021

Managing a hard drive can sometimes be a real headache. The tools offered natively by Windows work very well, but are seriously lacking in features. So when your system partition is full, it's hard to get out of it. Your computer starts to slow down, it is no longer possible to defragment your disk and you risk losing data or at least increasing disk errors.

There are many partition management software on the market. For this tutorial, I used a free utility, EaseUS Partition Master Free, allowing you to create, delete, resize, move, merge, divide, erase or format partitions on your disks.

How to extend system partition?

Typically on your computer, you have a system partition on which Windows and all your programs are installed. Next to it, a second partition is usually used to store your files.

So here's how to do it.

1- Download, install the free software EaseUS Partition Master Free and run it

2- Right-click on the partition you want to recover space from (please note that its size will be reduced as a result) and select the option Resize/Move Partitions. In this example, I used my D: drive where I store my data.

3- In the window that will open, you will be able to adjust the space you want to recover and choose the partition on which you want to allocate it.

In the upper part, scroll the slider to adjust the size of the space you want to free up. You can also enter the values directly in the field Subsequent unallocated space which corresponds to the space you want to add to your system partition.

In the lower part, select the drive on which you want to add the recovered space (here the C: drive)

4- Press the button To confirm. The operation will then be put on hold.

5- Start the operation by pressing the button Apply changes at the top of the screen

And there you have it, it's done. In just a few clicks, you will have managed to recover a little more space on your system partition!
