You have found a font in an image or on the Internet and you like it and you would like to identify it so that you can reuse it... unfortunately, you are not a calligrapher and you are not able, like most of us, to recognize a font.
So, know that there are some good quality resources on the Internet that allow you to recognize a font and even better, that allow you to discover new ones.
So I'm going to present to you here 4 online tools that will allow you to easily and freely identify fonts. The first 3 tools will allow you to work from an image and the last one will help you identify fonts directly on a web page. But with this you should have everything you need to find a font.
WhatTheFont to recognize a font
I already told you about it on Byothe.fr in 2014, but WhatTheFont is a tool that works very well for recognizing a font on an image.
Its operation online is quite simple. Upload an image on which is the font you want to identify, help WhatTheFont to identify the letters and in a few turns of the mill, it will suggest the fonts that are closest to the one you are looking for.
I'll let you rediscover the article where I explain how it works.
Matcherator to find a font
Here again, we must start from an image.
Matcherator tries to recognize the identified letters by itself. But in the test I did there were some errors (the "Y" was recognized as a "U", for example). Regardless, it is possible to modify the letters to match those in the image.
Again, the tool will offer you several fonts that resemble the one you are looking for.
Of the 3 image-based tools, this is probably the one with the most pleasant user interface.
FontSquirrel Font Identifier to identify fonts on an image
FontSquirrel also offers an online tool called Font Identifier that can identify fonts used in an image.
All you need to do is upload the image containing the font you want to identify and submit it to the tool. It will then analyze the image and provide you with a list of fonts similar to the one used in the image.
It is also possible to select specific characters to get more precise results. FontSquirrel Font Identifier is a very useful tool for design professionals and web developers looking to identify fonts used in images or screenshots.

WhatFontIs – the text font detector
There again, nothing original, the operation is very similar to the two previous sites.
To use it, nothing could be simpler, you must first select an image on your hard drive or from a URL then the tool will cut your image letter by letter and you will have to type the corresponding letter in a small box to help WhatFontIs analyze the font.
That said, of these tools, this is the one that was the most precise and managed to find the Bahaus font which is that of the Byothe.fr logo.
Depending on the fonts, these different tools may have more or less precise results... I'll let you try it out and find the one you prefer!
Fount – Font Recognition
Fount is very different from the first 3 tools and will complete your collection of essential sites. Here, it is no longer a question of going through an image to recognize a font but rather of identifying a font directly on a web page.
Just drag a small link into your bookmarks bar to be able to use Fount at any time on any Internet page. All you have to do is click on this link and select a piece of text on a page to know everything: font, size and even its style (bold, italic, etc.)!
I tested this tool in 2015 on Byothe.fr and he made a very good impression on me!
Best practices for optimal recognition
To find a font more easily, here are some tips to improve recognition by tools that work from an image.
- Use text that is written in BIG font... for example, you can zoom in on your browser to increase the font size. This will make detection easier.
- Avoid texts that are too short so that the tool has enough substance… but not too long to avoid having to type all the letters
- Don't use an image with multiple different fonts... the tools would be completely lost
There you have it, with all this you will be perfectly equipped to recognize a font that passes before your eyes... you will no longer have any excuses for not recognizing the fonts that you like!
