It's free, it's perfectly legal and it's a gift from Mojang, the studio behind Minecraft, which was bought by Microsoft in 2014. To celebrate the game's 10th anniversary, the studio is making it available for free version 0.0.23 of the game which revolutionized the world of sandbox gaming, namely the unbeatable Minecraft!
Available from any web browser, Minecraft Classic as it has been named allows you to play one of the early versions of the game. Of course, since this is an old version many things found in the current game are not yet implemented.
So you can explore a procedurally generated world and let your imagination run wild to build all sorts of things with the 32 types of blocks at your disposal. However, the interest will quickly be limited since this version did not yet include the possibility of mining and crafting. On the other hand, by sharing the link of your game, you will be able to invite 9 other people to play with you in a collaborative mode!
But you will also discover funny things that will make you realize how far this game has come since 2009. Indeed, once generated, the world is almost static. No trees grow, no animals wander around... the only dynamic block is that of water which will allow you to have the joy of flooding caves and other caverns!
Despite the huge evolutions of the game in recent years, this 2009 version is still very familiar to players. The sounds and textures have barely changed and the general look of the game is really similar to the current version. Fortunately, the game has become much more dynamic with monsters, animals, NPCs, biomes… the possibility of mining and crafting!
Ultimately, you're not going to go to Minecraft Classic for wild games, but rather in "historical tour" mode to rediscover the beginnings of what has become one of the greatest games of the last 10 years. And if you've never tried the game, this might be an opportunity to discover for free what makes it charming... but without forgetting that this version is already a decade old!
