For several years, Adobe has been annoying me by imposing a column on the right of the Adobe Acrobat Reader interface. The versions of the famous and essential PDF reader follow one another, but inexorably keep this side toolbar that I have never used (perhaps wrongly?).
Indeed, on this bar, a whole series of features that I do not use or very rarely and that I can look for elsewhere if I need them. There are several solutions to make this bar disappear and prevent it from opening with your PDF documents, but it will depend a little on the version of Acrobat Reader you have.

Here's how to remove the toolbar in Acrobat Reader
If you use a recent version of Acrobat, unfortunately there is no option to directly remove the right sidebar. However, there is a setting that allows you to always have it minimized to the side so as not to interfere with reading your documents.
- Open Acrobat Reader
- Open any PDF document (it doesn't matter which document)
- On the sidebar, click on the small triangle that allows you to minimize the toolbar

- And once the toolbar is minimized, a small button with a vertical line and an arrow will appear at the very bottom of the bar. Click on it to completely hide the toolbar.

- Once the toolbar no longer appears on the Acrobat Reader interface, go to the menu at the top of the interface: Edit > Preferences
- In Preferences, go to the “Documents” tab and check the “Remember current state of Tools panel” option.
And that's it, now you know how to remove the toolbar in Acrobat Reader! Every time you close Adobe Acrobat Reader, the position of the toolbar will be remembered. If it is visible the next time you open it, it will be visible and if it is closed, you will not see it when you open a PDF document.
Adobe no longer allows you to completely remove the toolbar, but this solution means you don't have to worry about it!
Disable the toolbar in older versions of Acrobat Reader
If you are ever using an older version of the software, here are some other ways to remove the toolbar in Acrobat Reader or Acrobat Reader DC.
For versions after 15.008.20082
For a while, Adobe had added an option to disable this famous toolbar with a simple box to uncheck to see it disappear once and for all this ergonomic aberration ! And it was really handy. So, if you have an old version of Acrobat Reader DC, you can try this solution:
- Open Acrobat Reader
- Go to Edit / Preferences…
- Choose the category “Documents”
- Uncheck the box “Open tools panel for each document”
- And voila !
For versions prior to 15.008.20082 no option, but it is possible to tinker
For very old versions of Acrobat, the solution is to delete some files in the application folders.
- Close Acrobat Reader DC
- Browse your computer and go to the following address:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat Reader DC\Reader\AcroApp\FRA - Create a new folder that you can call “Disabled”, for example
- Move the following 2 files there: AppCenter_R.aapp et Viewer.aapp
- And voila !
There you have it, you will now be able to view your PDFs in the full width of Acrobat Reader without having to close that **** sidebar every time you open a document!
This solution is reversible So, if you want to find this bar again, you never know, just put the files back in their original place!
Come on, don't hesitate to pass these solutions around you, I'm sure you'll make people happy who have been looking for a long time to remove the toolbar in Acrobat Reader!

Thanks Byothe.
And don't forget to uncheck "Tools panel" in the View menu, Show/Hide (or in Windows Shift+F4) in addition to the manipulation in the article.
Phew! Thanks to both of you, I've been struggling to close this damn shutter for a few months now and I didn't think it was possible to get rid of it, I was even considering changing my pdf reading program to stop having it...
Thank you very much! Do you also know how to recover the arrow, line, stamp tools… in the toolbar just above the document, to have direct access to them? I find them in the “tools” sheet but going back and forth is quite painful (and again, the arrow, you have to go through the search field, otherwise I can't even find it). Thank you very much in advance!
Thank you so much !
This sign was driving me crazy
Remove the sidebar on the right of the screen (Tools panel) on Acrobat reader 2015:
Hello,
On the 2015 version, you must first close the tools panel displayed on the right of the screen using the small arrow on the side of the banner, then
1-Go to Edit / Preferences…
2-Then Documents
3-Uncheck the box “Remember current state of Tools panel”
4-Close Acrobat then reopen Acrobat, and normally the panel should no longer be displayed.
well For me with adober Dc it's the opposite you have to check "remember current state..." so that the panel (previously deleted) no longer appears 🙂
The fact remains that, even when closed, this bar is polluting because when you want to scroll through the pages quickly, before you just had to make a big mouse movement to the right to reach the edge of the screen, whereas now you can't because you activate this stupid pane.
It should be made to disappear completely.
Really thanks for the tip, I appreciate it!
Great! Thanks! I did the 2nd manipulation.
One question though, if I do it when saving my documents (as is the case now, the bar no longer appears) my recipients receive them as I saved them and no longer have this right sidebar, or does it depend on what is checked/unchecked in each person's preferences?
The goal for me in doing this manipulation is precisely to send clean documents, not polluted by this sidebar.
Thank you.
Hello Eden
This manipulation locally modifies Adobe's preferences... so it doesn't impact the file. It's really at the software level.
Thank you very much for this tip that I have been using for a long time and which has saved me from repeated nervous breakdowns!
However, it's the LEFT pane that's driving me crazy now... It keeps wanting to open a tree view with bookmarks I don't care about, or page thumbnails... It's possible to close this pane by right-clicking - hide browser buttons, but I think we can do better so that it's hidden by default every time the program is opened, right?
If anyone has the answer, I would be extremely grateful!!
