Scribe – Ceméa: the tool you need to transcribe your audio files?

Article updated on December 21, 2025 by Byothe

When we think of automatic transcription, we immediately imagine a complex technology, paid for, or managed by a large company. And yet, there are simple, free, and accessible alternatives. Scribe – Ceméa is one of them. This online tool allows you to transform your audio or video files into text, for free and without exploiting your dataIt doesn't promise perfection, but it does the job in a simple and effective way. Scribe is designed for trainers, volunteers, the curious... and anyone who wants to keep control of their content. It offers a different vision of digital: free, ethical, and accessible. The tool has its limitations, of course, but also real qualities that are worth discovering.

An open source tool for transcribing audio files into text

Scribe – Ceméa is first and foremost an activist project. It is supported by Ceméa (Active Education Methods Training Centers), a popular education movement that advocates for open, sober and emancipatory digital technology. It is based in particular on projects Common Voice de Mozilla et Vosk to offer a concrete alternative to centralized voice recognition.

And as soon as you arrive on the site, you realize that you're not on a service like any other. No account, no dashboard: just a clean form where you upload your file. That's it. This deliberately minimalist interface can be surprising, especially if you're used to "real-time" platforms. Here, everything goes through e-mailYou will first receive a notification, then the results, once the transcription is complete.

This somewhat old-school approach is consistent with the spirit of the project. Less flashy technology, more control and simplicity. Scribe promises nothing more than what it delivers: a simple, lightweight tool, without marketing or data collection. And for those who want to go further, it's even possible to self-host it, with the help of CEMÉA, to make it a local service within a collective, an association, or a public structure.

How far does Scribe – Ceméa go in terms of transcription?

If you're looking for a quick solution to transcribe a file, Scribe – Ceméa may be just the ticket. Once you submit your audio or video via the form, you'll receive two emails: the first to confirm that processing has started, and the second with the results. It all works well, provided you're patient.

In the file In the .zip file you will receive, you will find three items:

  • a .txt file containing the raw transcription
  • an .srt file for subtitles
  • a .txt file with the timings

The Vosk engine supports multiple languages (French, English, Spanish, etc.), but only those that have been well-trained. There's no automatic speaker recognition, no online interface, and no artificial intelligence to enrich tone or correct syntax. Contrary to what one might think, this isn't a weakness. It's a conscious choice. The approach is deliberately simple, offering a raw yet fully usable result.

And for many uses, it's more than enough, including documenting a meeting, archiving a testimony, or adding subtitles to a video. If you have more advanced requirements, however, you might be left a little disappointed. There's no automatic correction, no processing in a few seconds, and no intelligent voice separation either.

Yet this is the whole point of Scribe – Ceméa's positioning: to do little, but to do it well, with free tools, without overpromising or depending on the cloud. Clearly, this is a human-sized tool, designed for real needs. As long as you accept this framework, you will undoubtedly be pleasantly surprised by its reliability.
