What has always fascinated me about the web is the inventiveness of people and their ability to create sites for anything and everything. And this is particularly the case with Taste Atlas (literally the Atlas of taste), a kind ofonline atlas of world cuisine. Besides, we had already seen something a bit similar for languages and accents of the world.
On a large planisphere, this site allows you to discover the culinary specialties from all countries of the world…And when I say country it’s even more precise than that, because by zooming in on the map you can discover the cities and regions of origin of thousands of dishes from around the world!
Travel the world of gastronomy with TasteAtlas
I am a very greedy person and when I travel, I like to discover the local gastronomy. A few months ago, for example, I happily discovered welch, a Welsh speciality made with melted cheddar that is often found in the north of France… I came across it by chance and I didn't regret it!
But, TasteAtlas is a site that allows you to discover world gastronomy in a different way… sitting comfortably in front of your computer or smartphone.
Photos of thousands of dishes are thus displayed on a map, according to their place of origin. By zooming in on the map, you will discover more and more specialties… By zooming in on France, we can see, for example, macaroons, kouign-amann, bouillabaisse or even cassoulet…
But on each photo of the dish displayed, a small circle indicates the number of specialties to discover at this location by zooming in again! Thus, by enlarging the map on the Loir-et-Cher and the famous Tarte Tatin, we discover other specialties of the region and in particular cheeses and wines!
But that's not all, because by clicking on any of these specialties, you will access a description sheet of it. In this sheet you will discover a few words on the origins of the specialty, its main ingredients, pretty and often appetizing photos and its place of origin.
Finally, if you are the collector type or if you want to contribute to the site, you can create a free account in which you will be able to list all the specialties that you have already tasted or those that you would like to try!
The site is really well designed and the illustrations are often very tempting! If you are world cuisine fan, I think TasteAtlas is a must to find new ideas!
Small downside and you have certainly noticed it, TasteAtlas is 100% in English. If you have trouble understanding certain texts, you can always translate with the excellent DeepL. But in most cases, the names of the specialties and their photos should be enough to make your mouth water!
