Have you ever received files in a format that you couldn't open or needed to convert a file to a more suitable format? Whether it's a PDF to DOC, a JPG to GIF or a WAV to MP3, documents, images, audio and video files can be converted relatively easily !
Each of the following free, online services is very convenient because they allow you to convert most formats imaginable in one place. This way, you don't need to bookmark multiple sites to cover the most common types of conversions or those you need most often.
Just choose the one you prefer from this list and you are covered!
1. Convert.files
Convert.Files is another simple option with a multitude of input and output file formats. Browse for your file or enter its URL to get started. Select your formats from document, drawing, presentation, ebook, video, image, archive, or audio types. If you upload your file, the input method may autofill in the correct format if it is easy to detect.
Then, just click the "Convert" button to get your file. Once the conversion is complete, click the link provided to get the file in the new format. And if you are looking for a specific file type that is not very common, feel free to check out the list of supported formats to find out if it is available!
2. Zamzar
Behind this rather unusual and non-explicit name (unlike other tools) lies a tool to convert more than 1 file types. To save time, the most popular conversions are accessible via links on the home page (like PDF to Word…). Then, browse for your file or enter its URL and choose the output format. You can choose from many image, document, music, video, ebook, or archive file formats.
Zamzar works a little differently than other converters in that you have to enter an email address to get a link to your new file. The site also offers an inbox to manage your files through a paid account. If you don't mind using your email address to receive your file, or even if you prefer to work that way, check out Zamzar.
3. Convertio
To quickly convert files from your computer, Dropbox, Google Drive, or a URL, check out Convertio. Select your file, then choose your conversion format as an image, document, ebook, font, or vector. The great thing about Convertio is that you can convert multiple files at once by clicking the “Add more files” button. Plus, you can save your converted files to Dropbox or Google Drive if you want.
Click the Convert button when you are ready and you will be able to track the progress of the conversion and see the file size target. Then click the Download button to retrieve your file. If you converted multiple files at once you will also have the option to retrieve them all in a single ZIP file.
Little bonus, the site is translated into French!
4. Online File Converter

As you can see, there are plenty of file conversion sites to choose from! Online File Converter is yet another service that converts audio, video, image, document, and archive file formats for free. Locate the type of document you want to convert, choose a target format, and browse to your hard drive or enter its URL. Again, the site offers thousands of conversion combinations.
The site offers some interesting options when converting certain file types. For example, you can change the dimensions, color, or enhance image files. Or for audio files, it is possible to adjust the sample rate, number of channels… When you are done, click “Convert File Now” and then “Download Converted File” when it is done.
5. Online-Convert.com
Before you even try your first file conversion on Online-Convert.com, you can quickly check the supported file types. In the small box at the top right, enter the file types you want to convert. Click “Go” and you will be able to see if the site supports what you need. Then, when you are ready to start, you can choose between audio, video, image, document, ebook, or archive converter right on the main page. It is even possible to choose a conversion based on your device (“Device”)… so that you have, for example, videos in a format compatible with your iPhone.

6. FileZigZag
FileZigZag is a file converter that requires your email address similar to Zamzar and supports document, audio, image, video and archive file formats. Simply upload your file, select the output format, enter your email address and click Convert. When you receive the email, follow the link to get your converted file.
Once your file is converted, FileZigZag gives you a few options to set. You can immediately delete the file from their server (default is 3 days), upload the converted file to cloud storage, or convert the source file or the converted file to another format. Again, if you like to have an email to track the link to your file, FileZigZag is a good free service.
7. FreeFileConvert
FreeFileConvert supports a dizzying number of conversion combinations. There are no less than 8 possible ones. So if you have an uncommon file to convert, this is probably the best option available to you.
You can add up to five files to convert at once as long as they are of the same type. Once you have uploaded your file, the output format box will offer you a list of suitable formats. Click “Convert” and when it is ready, click “Download” to get your file.
