Update: As of April 2023, TwilioQuest has rebranded to TerminalQuest!
Programming is an activity that requires a lot of practice. Good developers have often spent hours and hours tinkering in different programming languages to perfect their knowledge and master the subject.
Nowadays, it is within everyone's reach to get started in this profession. Books are published every day, many MOOCs and online courses allow you to get started and there are even games designed to help you take your first steps.
And this is the case of TwilioQuest !
Developed by the Twilio platform to encourage you to use its tools, TwilioQuest is a small 16-bit style RPG that will put you in the shoes of an operator of the TwilioQuest program. In this context, you will receive intensive training in a variety of technical skills… with the aim of saving the Cloud! Just that!
As in most role-playing games, the game starts with the creation of your character before diving into the adventure. You will then gradually discover what is expected of you thanks to the help and advice that a little robot named Cedric will give you.
He is the one who will explain all the game mechanisms to you. Then you will encounter your first tests which are intended to familiarize you with the interface and concepts of the game.
These concepts, precisely, will call upon programming. You will encounter missions in which you will have to write lines of code… but rest assured, you are not left abandoned, because for each of these missions you have a guide explaining what you must do. These missions will allow you to advance in the story in order to offer you even more exercises, but also to obtain rewards and experience.
One of the goals of the game is also to teach you how to use the modules and APIs offered by Twilio and you will learn with concrete examples such as setting up a Raspberry Pi with a cellular connection.
The game is really well done, but it is aimed more at advanced beginners than at real beginners. In addition, you will need to have a good command of English to really appreciate it…
The game is available for Windows, Mac and Linux.
