After iOS 18 in 2024, we naturally expected to discover iOS 19, faithful to the traditional numbering… but no. It is iOS 26 which was presented, just like that, without warning. A jump of seven versions. A little wave of a digital magic wand.
And you are probably wondering: "What is Apple planning now? Why such a radical change?"
Well, there is an explanation. And even if it sounds like a marketing whim, It's much more strategic than it seems..
A logic based on the year
Apple harmonizes its entire ecosystem
Until now, each Apple system had its own release schedule. iOS 18, macOS 15, tvOS 17, visionOS 1, watchOS… well… we don't even know anymore. It was a joyful mess.
So Apple decided to align everything. Now, the version number corresponds to the reference year. As Like iOS 26 will be released in fall 2025, it will be mainly used in 2026. Hence this figure.
Same principle for the other systems: iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26… and visionOS also follows the movement. A beautiful synchronization which will make everyone's life easier, developers and users alike.
No more version puzzles
You will no longer need to wonder if iOS 22 is 2021 or 2023. Everything will be much more intuitive. Basically, if you buy an iPhone in 2026, it will run iOS 26. Simple, clear, and crystal clear.
Liquid Glass Design: The New Look of Apple OS
But this name change isn't just for Tim Cook's slides to look good. It's also a sign of a major visual change. Apple introduces with iOS 26 (and its cousins) a new design called Liquid glass.
What is this Liquid Glass?
Imagine an interface made of liquid glass—fluid, translucent, shiny, a little futuristic but still elegant. It's the biggest aesthetic overhaul since iOS 7, and I can tell you that it doesn't go unnoticed.
The menus are more dynamic, the backgrounds play with light, the animations are more flexible. We clearly feel the influence of visionOS, the interface of Apple Vision Pro. Everything is designed to be harmonious and immersive, whether on iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Watch.
iOS 26: When and for whom?

- Final exit : scheduled as usual in September, at the same time as the new iPhone.
And good news: the list of compatible devices remains relatively generous, even if some older models will be left aside - logical after so many years of service.
Why this change is a good thing
At first glance, this version jump may seem like a gimmick. One might think that Apple just wanted to create a buzz or cover its tracks. But in reality, it reflects a desire to overall consistencyAnd for once, we can't blame them.

When you see “macOS 26”, “watchOS 26”, “iOS 26”, you will know that they are all part of the same software generation. No more need to look for which OS corresponds to which year. Convenient.
2. Simplified communication
For Apple, it is also a way to better communicate its ecosystem. Every year, a new version clearly identified. This also gives a feeling of annual freshness stronger, which could even influence the names of future iPhones. Imagine: iPhone 26, Apple Watch 26… We’re almost there.
